My name is Rufus Jackson Faulk and it is with an enormous sense of pride and an unwavering commitment to community that I announce my candidacy to represent District 7 as your next city councilor.
I was born and raised in Roxbury. I am a product of our public schools, community centers and most importantly the people and relationships I've made over these last 35 years.
I am the proud son of Rufus and Leslie Faulk. High school sweethearts, Boston Technical High School graduates and teenage parents, who will be celebrating their 36th year of marriage this upcoming July. My father is one of 15 children and grew up in the Cathedral housing development while my mother the youngest of 4 grew up in Mission Hill. Both from extremely humble beginnings but sacrificed their todays to ensure that their children had better tomorrows.
The lesson of sacrifice and the importance of service were instilled in me by my parents and I've carried their teachings with me throughout my personal and professional life. After receiving my Bachelors degree from Temple University, I decided to return home in order to help end the culture of retaliatory gang violence that was devastating our community. In doing this grassroots community development work, I realized how devastating ineffective public policy can be and how important it is to have individuals with contextual experience at the table making decisions.
This realization is what prompted me to complete my Masters in Urban Affairs from Boston University and currently be in pursuit of my Doctorate in Law and Policy from Northeastern University. A command of public policy is what I will bring to the city council but more importantly I have a vested interest in insuring that the quality of life in District 7 is improved.
I am running for office because I want to ensure that the opportunities that were afforded to me will be available to my 3 year old daughter and every other young person within our District. For the city of Boston to be great, Roxbury and District 7 has to flourish and I will fight to ensure that we work together to reach our full potential.
